Mirant
Brand Description Back
Mirant make and sell electricity competitively, reliably, ethically, and safely for their customers.

Their business consists of:

* Power generation from an asset portfolio of a11 power plants strategically located in high-population areas.
* Commercial operations that support their power generation plants - and their customers - through logistics, risk management, marketing, and trading activities.

But equally important to them is delivering power through people. They're passionate about serving communities in whatever ways they can - whether that's building homes for struggling families or removing debris from riverbanks. For thousands of Mirant employees, this is part of what being an "energy" provider is about.

Their 11 generating plants produce as much as 10,097 megawatts of electricity - enough to power about 10 million homes - for wholesale and large retail customers. These plants are supported by thei risk management and marketing operations in Atlanta - services that help them optimize plant efficiency and cost management.

Diversity is a major strength of their portfolio:

* Roughly half of their units are baseload and intermediate units. Baseload units are used to meet the minimum power requirements for customers.
* Intermediate units are designed to meet demand above baseload requirements to address daily or seasonal fluctuations.
* Peaking units - generating plants operated only during hours of the day or at certain times of the year when demand for energy spikes - account for a portion of their portfolio.
* Approximately half of their plants can be switched from one fuel type to another (oil, gas, or coal), enabling them to better manage their business in the midst of fuel price volatility.

They go where the opportunity is. Their assets are located close to large metropolitan areas where demand for energy is high: San Francisco; Washington, D.C.; Boston and New York City.
